00 - Position Type: Seasonal Details: Seasonal Open Until Filled Job Summary Under the direct supervision of the head instructor, this person is responsible for the safe operation of the City’s youth sailing programs.
The employee will assist with the instruction of the City’s sailing programs and help maintain buildings, vessels, and equipment by performing routine and general maintenance.
Sail Camp instructors are responsible for ensuring the safety of all program participants and the program's overall quality.
Customer service and parent interaction are part of this position’s daily routine.
Sail Camp instructors are employed to perform any other assigned duties when not actively serving in the role of a Sail Camp instructor.
Essential Job Functions Assist in the instruction of sailing programs.
Supervises program participants and ensure their safety.
Inspect all equipment daily and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor.
Qualifications Possess a valid Driver’s License with Vessel endorsement.
Possess US Sailing Instructor Certification or equivalent preferred.
Possess Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – Adult, Infant, and Child-First Aid Certification Have the ability to travel to attend conferences, workshop, and seminars.
Have the ability to work overtime, weekends, and other nonstandard hours.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Reading skills to understand laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to the operations of the department and facilities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, and the general public.
Verbal skills to communicate effectively with staff, participants, and parents.
Math skills to perform basic math to maintain financial and activity records.
Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding, surveillance, and rescue techniques.
Writing skills to clearly and neatly complete forms and reports.
Knowledge of city and departmental policies, rules, and procedures.
Supervisory skills to give clear and concise instructions to participants.
Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions in accordance with established policies.
Knowledge of and ability to rig, safely sail, and derig small dinghy boats (Optimists, Sunfish fleets) Ability to swim 50 yards while wearing a USCG Type III PFD, close-toed shoes, and clothing.
Education and Work Experience Possess a High School diploma or equivalent, or currently enrolled in an academic program to complete or earn the equivalent.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical demands: Work requires frequent physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities, recurring lifting of heavy items such as boat motors.
The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above average swimming ability, agility, dexterity and strength.
Work environment: The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions.
Employees may be required to work outside in extreme conditions.
